The End of Days is upon us. The Antichrist has come of age, the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse have been called to do their duties, the forces of Heaven and Hell are taking up arms to wage the final battle, and Earth is right smack in the middle of it. The only thing that stands in its way is an unlikely angel and devil duo, some incredibly quirky characters, and a book that has foretold how it’s all going to go down.

Two heavyweight authors, Gaiman (who I am personally a huge fan of) and Pratchett (haven’t really heard of him but he’s pretty famous for his comic graphic novels) team up to give us this extremely hilarious piece of literature. For most of the book, it was hard for me to recognize who wrote which, but then again, the authors said that there was a point in time where they couldn’t figure out who wrote which either.

They said they were having so much fun writing it, and they pulled it off with flying colors. They managed to take the frikin Apocalypse and make it a helluva lot of fun.

Again, the selling point of this book, for me, is its humor. It’s a refreshing break from the predictable jokes (see: knock-knock jokes and pick-up lines) that are all the rage here in the Philippines. With a very laid-back, easy-going writing style, the jokes come out of nowhere and give you a bad case of spontaneous giggles. I think this is because all through out the book, it never seems like the authors want to make you laugh, yknow, never forcing a joke. They just make it look natural, so that the punchlines keep on rolling smoothly. Which can also describe the way the characters behave in the pages, they seem so natural, believable (if you’re crazy enough), and never out of place.

And speaking of characters, the book sports an extremely - for lack of a better term - quirky and entertaining cast. From Crawly (who thought his name didn’t fit him at all) to Agnes Nutter whose prophecies are so accurate that nobody believed them true, and even the minor characters who were lucky enough to be part of the events leading up to the end of the world are up to par with the high rollers.

Aaaand to add a bit more flavor to the book, they have footnotes that you don’t really have to read, but are very rewarding when you do. I mean, who doesn’t love footnotes.

5/5 for being such a refreshing read, and +1 for being a product of two guys just having fun writing. Definitely a recommended read.
